Photo ID and Security Checks at the Prometric Test Centre

On the day of your API certification examination, you must complete Prometric’s identity verification and security procedures before you are permitted to enter the examination room.

Identification Requirements

You must present one original, valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID that includes your photograph, signature, and name exactly as it appears on your API application. Acceptable forms of identification typically include:

  • Passport
  • Driving licence
  • National identity card
  • Military identification card

If your primary government-issued photo ID does not include a signature, you will normally be required to present a second identification document bearing your signature. Identification documents should use Latin characters, where required by API and Prometric policies.

Always check the latest API and Prometric identification requirements before your examination.

Security Screening

Before entering the examination room, Prometric staff may ask you to:

  • Present your identification documents.
  • Sign the attendance register electronically or on paper.
  • Pass through a metal detector.
  • Empty your pockets.
  • Roll up your sleeves and trouser legs for inspection.
  • Allow inspection of your eyeglasses to ensure they do not contain recording devices.
  • Answer simple identity verification questions, such as your date of birth or registered email address.

These procedures are designed to maintain the security and integrity of the examination.

What Can You Bring?

Personal belongings are not permitted in the examination room.

Typically, you may only bring:

  • Your approved identification document(s)
  • A bottle of water (subject to Prometric’s local policies)

Jewellery is generally not permitted, although a plain wedding ring is usually acceptable.

Prometric will normally provide:

  • Scratch paper or note sheets
  • A pencil or erasable writing instrument
  • An approved calculator, where permitted

Important: Check Your ID Before Exam Day

If you fail to present an acceptable valid government-issued photo ID, Prometric may refuse you entry to the examination. This may be treated as a missed examination appointment (no-show) under API’s policies, which could require you to pay applicable rescheduling fees.

Before travelling to the test centre:

  • Confirm that your identification has not expired.
  • Ensure the name on your ID matches the name on your API application.
  • If possible, bring a second valid government-issued photo ID as a backup.

We have seen candidates arrive fully prepared for the examination only to discover that their driving licence had expired. Although one candidate returned shortly afterwards with a valid passport, the examination appointment could not be reinstated because the scheduled start time had already passed.

A simple check before leaving home could have avoided the inconvenience, additional fees, and delay in taking the examination.

Personal Belongings and Lockers

Before entering the examination room, Prometric will provide you with a locker for storing your personal belongings.

You will not normally be permitted to access the locker during the examination. However, candidates taking the core API examinations (such as API 510, API 570, API 653, and API 1169, where applicable) may access their locker during the scheduled break in accordance with Prometric’s procedures.

Arriving early, carrying the correct identification, and understanding the security procedures will help ensure a smooth and stress-free start to your examination day.
