How Does API Select the Reference Materials and Design the Examination Questions?
API develops its certification examinations through a structured and rigorous process to ensure they accurately assess the knowledge and competencies required of today’s inspection professionals.
Job Analysis
Periodically, the American Petroleum Institute (API) conducts a Job Analysis Study involving experienced inspectors, engineers, employers, and industry experts. The purpose of this study is to identify the duties, responsibilities, and technical competencies that certified inspectors perform in their day-to-day work.
The findings of the job analysis are used to define the Body of Knowledge (BoK) for each certification. The BoK then determines:
- The reference codes and recommended practices used in the examination.
- The topics that candidates are expected to understand.
- The weighting of each subject area.
- The knowledge and skills required to perform the job safely and competently.
How Are Examination Questions Designed?
API examination questions are designed to assess more than your ability to recall facts. Their purpose is to verify that you can understand, interpret, and apply the requirements of the applicable codes and standards in realistic inspection situations.
While some practical (closed-book) questions require you to remember important code requirements, definitions, numerical limits, and well-established inspection principles, a large proportion of the examination tests your ability to apply your knowledge to real-world scenarios.
Simply memorizing facts and figures is therefore not enough to pass the examination.
Successful candidates are expected to:
- Understand the intent of the applicable codes and recommended practices.
- Interpret code requirements correctly.
- Apply technical knowledge to practical inspection situations.
- Select the most appropriate answer based on engineering judgement and code compliance.
How Our Training Helps
Our training courses are designed to develop both your technical knowledge and your problem-solving skills.
Rather than encouraging memorization, we explain the reasoning behind code requirements, inspection principles, and engineering calculations. Our lessons, worked examples, and mock examinations help you understand why a requirement exists and how it should be applied in different scenarios.
This approach not only improves your chances of passing the API examination but also helps you become a more knowledgeable and competent inspection professional.
