API 510 — PANIC CHECKLIST

Here’s a panic checklist for API 510 (or any timed code exam)—for the exact moment you freeze, blank out, or feel overwhelmed. The goal is to restart thinking quickly and stop time loss immediately.

🧪 API 510 — PANIC CHECKLIST (IF YOU FREEZE)

🚨 STEP 1 — STOP THE BLEEDING (5–10 SECONDS)

When you freeze:

  • ✋ Stop reading the question immediately
  • 🧠 Put pen down for 5 seconds
  • 👀 Look away from the screen/page briefly

Mental reset:

“I am stuck. I will restart with a simpler approach.”

🧠 STEP 2 — SWITCH FROM “THINKING” TO “SORTING” MODE

You are NOT solving yet.

You are ONLY classifying the question:

Ask:

  • Is this calculation?
  • Is this code lookup?
  • Is this theory (damage/NDE/inspection)?

👉 Just label it. No solving.

⚡ STEP 3 — FIND THE “FIRST EASY ENTRY POINT”

Every question has one.

Look for:

  • Given numbers → corrosion / MAWP
  • Keywords → RT, UT, corrosion, inspection
  • Section hints → API 510 / UG-27 / UW-12

👉 Your goal: find the first usable hook

🟢 STEP 4 — APPLY “MINIMUM ACTION RULE”

Now do ONLY ONE of these:

If calculation:

  • Write formula immediately
  • Plug numbers WITHOUT overthinking

If code:

  • Scan keyword only (NOT paragraph reading)
  • Find section heading only

If theory:

  • Eliminate 2 obvious wrong answers

⏱️ STEP 5 — TIME RESET RULE (CRITICAL)

If still stuck after 60–90 seconds:

👉 IMMEDIATELY:

  • Mark question
  • Move on
  • Do NOT revisit yet

🧠 STEP 6 — BREATH RESET (10–15 SECONDS)

If panic continues:

  • Inhale 4 seconds
  • Hold 2 seconds
  • Exhale 6 seconds

Then:

“Next easy question only.”

🔁 STEP 7 — RETURN LATER SYSTEM

You will ALWAYS come back later using:

  • Easy question sweep
  • Medium question sweep
  • Final guessing pass

🚨 STEP 8 — WHAT NOT TO DO (IMPORTANT)

When frozen, avoid:

❌ Re-reading same question repeatedly
❌ Searching full code sections
❌ Trying to “fully understand” before acting
❌ Spending >2–3 minutes on one problem
❌ Changing correct instincts multiple times

🧠 STEP 9 — EMERGENCY RESTART SCRIPT

Use this mentally:

“I don’t need perfect. I need the next easy step.”

Then:

  • Find formula OR keyword OR elimination
  • Move forward immediately

⚡ STEP 10 — RECOVERY PRIORITY ORDER

After panic recovery:

  1. Easy calculation questions
  2. Simple theory (NDE / damage)
  3. Inspection interval questions
  4. Code lookup only if obvious
  5. Skip anything complex

🧠 FINAL GOLD RULE

“Momentum beats accuracy when you’re stuck.”

🚀 ONE-LINE RESET MANTRA

“Pause. Classify. Extract one step. Move on.”
