Application Deadline
To be eligible for your chosen API examination window, your application must be approved by API before the application deadline, which is typically around eight weeks before the start of the selected examination window.
Although you may receive your approval before the deadline, applying at the last minute is not recommended. By the time your application is approved, many examination appointments may already be fully booked, making it difficult to secure your preferred date or test centre.
In some cases, your preferred Prometric test centre may have no remaining appointments within the three-week examination window. You may then need to travel to another test centre, which could be located hundreds of miles away or even in another country.
This is because API examinations are delivered through a limited network of approximately 600 Prometric test centres worldwide, and popular locations can fill up quickly.
Our Recommendation
To maximize your chances of obtaining your preferred examination date and location, we recommend that you:
- Apply for API certification approximately six months before your intended examination window for the core certifications (API 510, API 570, API 653, and API 1169).
- Apply approximately four months before your intended examination window for most non-core certifications.
In other words, rather than selecting the next immediate examination window, consider choosing one that is four to six months away. This gives you ample time to:
- Complete the application process
- Obtain your API Examination Authorization Notice
- Book your preferred Prometric test centre and appointment
- Prepare thoroughly for the examination without unnecessary pressure
Early planning not only reduces stress but also increases your chances of securing a convenient examination location and achieving the best possible result if you are sitting for a core exam at a prometric test center.
