How Is the Percentage of API Examination Questions Distributed Among the Codes and Recommended Practices?
Understanding how examination questions are distributed across the reference codes and recommended practices is one of the most effective ways to plan your study time.
Using the API 510 Pressure Vessel Inspector examination as an example, the Publication Effectivity Sheet (PES) specifies eight primary reference documents:
- API 510
- ASME Section V
- ASME Section VIII
- ASME Section IX
- Four API Recommended Practices (RPs)
Although all of these references are examinable, they do not carry equal weight. Some documents contribute significantly more questions than others and therefore deserve greater attention during your preparation.
For example, approximately 45% of the API 510 examination is based on the API 510 Code, even though it is only about 60 pages long. The remaining 55% of the examination is drawn from the other reference documents, which together comprise more than 2,000 pages of technical material.
This demonstrates an important study principle: not every page is equally important. Simply reading every reference document from cover to cover is not the most efficient way to prepare for the examination.
Our training courses are designed with this weighting in mind. We allocate study time according to the expected examination emphasis, ensuring that the most heavily tested topics receive the greatest level of detail, explanations, worked examples, illustrations, and practice questions. This focused approach helps you study more efficiently, maximize your preparation time, and improve your chances of success in the API certification examination.
