How to Prioritize and Plan Your Study for API Exam?
You have a limited amount of time to prepare for your API examination, so it is essential to use your study time wisely. The key principle is simple: focus your effort where you will get the maximum return.
Focus on High-Weight Topics First
For example, in the API 510 examination, approximately 40-45% of the questions are based on the API 510 code itself. This means it should be your top priority.
A practical way to allocate your study time is:
- Spend more time on high-weight documents such as API 510
- For every hour spent on supporting reference codes and recommended practices, spend approximately two hours on API 510 content
We provide detailed breakdowns of question distribution for each certification so you know exactly where to focus your effort. Each code and recommended practice is also prioritized based on the expected number of examination questions.
One Month Before the Exam
If you are about one month away from your examination:
- Read all reference codes at least once
- Focus on highlighted and important sections
- Begin practising with the question bank and topic-based exercises
This stage is about building familiarity and reinforcing key concepts.
Two Weeks Before the Exam
If you are about two weeks from the exam:
- Focus on our highlighted sections of the codes and recommended practices
- Concentrate heavily on mock examinations
- Practise timed questions to improve speed and accuracy
This phase helps you simulate real exam conditions and strengthen your exam technique.
Final Week Before the Exam
In the final week:
- Revise flash cards and key summaries
- Revisit highlighted sections of codes and RPs
- Focus on quick recall and reinforcement rather than learning new topics
Smart Study Strategy
Effective exam preparation is not about studying everything equally—it is about studying strategically. By focusing on high-weight topics, revising systematically, and practising under exam conditions, you can significantly improve both your efficiency and your chances of success.
How to Sign Up for the API Examination
API certification examinations are delivered through Prometric, the official global testing provider contracted by the American Petroleum Institute (API) for computer-based testing.
Step 1: Register with API
Candidates must first register directly with API and obtain authorization approval. Once your application is reviewed and approved, API will issue an authorization email allowing you to proceed with exam scheduling.
Step 2: Schedule Your Exam with Prometric
After receiving API authorization, you can book your exam date at a Prometric test centre of your choice. Prometric operates approximately 600 test centres worldwide, giving candidates flexibility in selecting a convenient location.
Remote Proctoring Option
For eligible API certification examinations, you also have the option of remote proctoring. This allows you to take your examination from the comfort of your home or office, eliminating the need to travel to a Prometric test centre and potentially saving both travel and accommodation costs.
Remote proctoring is available only for API examinations that are entirely closed-book. Examinations that include an open-book component—such as API 510, API 570, API 653, and API 1169—must be taken in person at an authorized Prometric test centre.
If your chosen certification is eligible for remote proctoring and you meet the technical and environmental requirements, this option provides a convenient and flexible way to complete your API examination.
Step 3: Important Deadlines
It is important to plan ahead. The deadline to receive your API authorization email is typically around 8 weeks prior to your selected exam 3 weeks window. Early application is strongly recommended to avoid delays in scheduling.
Step 4: Exam Delivery Method
Most API examinations are conducted via Prometric computer-based testing centres.
- In-person at Prometric test centres is required for all exams that include an open-book component, such as:
- API 510
- API 570
- API 653
- API 1169
- Remote proctoring may be available for certain API examinations that are fully closed-book, depending on API policies and current availability.
