What Is an API Examination Window?

When applying for an API certification examination, you must select one of the available three-week examination windows offered by the American Petroleum Institute (API).

An examination window is the period during which you are eligible to schedule and take your exam. After your application is approved, you can choose an available date and time within your selected window at a Prometric test centre or, where applicable, through remote proctoring.

Can I Change My Examination Window?

You should choose your examination window carefully. Once your application has been submitted and your examination window selected, changing it may require rescheduling your examination and paying the applicable API rescheduling fee, subject to API’s current policies and deadlines.

Missing your scheduled examination or changing your examination window at short notice may also affect your application and could require additional fees. Therefore, it is important to select a window that gives you sufficient time to prepare and that fits your personal and work commitments.

Important: Do Not Miss Your Examination Window

It is your responsibility to schedule and attend your examination within your allocated three-week examination window.

If you do not take the examination within that window—for any reason—you may be required to reschedule your examination and pay the applicable API rescheduling fee, subject to API’s current policies.

Examples include:

• Not attending your scheduled examination (no-show)
• Failing to book an examination appointment within the allocated window
• Waiting too long to schedule your exam and finding that your preferred Prometric test centre has no available appointments
• Choosing not to book an available appointment at another Prometric test centre within the examination window

To avoid unnecessary costs and disappointment, we strongly recommend scheduling your examination as soon as you receive your API authorization email.

Early booking gives you the best chance of securing your preferred date, time, and test centre.

Remember, popular examination windows and test centres can fill up quickly, so do not wait until the last minute to book your exam.
