API 510, the Pressure Vessel Inspection Code: In-Service Inspection, Rating, Repair, and Alteration, is an essential inspection code developed by the American Petroleum Institute (API). This code provides rules for the inspection, repair, alteration, and rerating activities for pressure vessels and their associated pressure relieving devices. The latest edition, the 11th, was released in October 2022.

Initially published in 1958 as a recommended practice, API 510 serves as a comprehensive guide for both internal and external inspections, as well as on-stream and thickness measurement inspections of pressure vessels. Over the years, the code has evolved to incorporate technological advancements, changes in inspection practices, and new methodologies.

 

A significant development was the introduction of minimum requirements for risk-based inspection as an alternative to conventional inspection planning criteria in the 1990s.

API RP 572 complements API 510 by offering logic and best practices to assist practitioners in effectively inspecting pressure vessels.

Industry Application

API 510 is applicable to most refining and chemical processing vessels that are in service, but its use can extend to other industries where pressure vessels are utilized, depending on the operator’s discretion.

The code encompasses vessels constructed according to recognized construction codes, such as the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, as well as those that do not meet these criteria, often referred to as noncode vessels. Additionally, vessels built according to a recognized construction code but lacking their nameplate or stamping are also included under API 510. However, it does not cover decommissioned vessels or  pressure vessels on movable structures.
