EN 10 2 0 4 Metallic products, Types of inspection documents identifies 4 types of material certificates:

  • 1 type: is a mere certificate of compliance issued by manufacturer.
  • 2 type: includes the chemical composition and mechanical test report but not necessarily from the same heat number
  • 1 type: includes the chemical composition and mechanical test report from the same heat number
  • 2 type: includes the chemical composition and mechanical test report from the same heat number that has been witnessed and counter signed by an independent third party inspection or client’s inspector.

3.2 type of material certificate has full material traceability and is only selected when the material traceability is very important for the project.

Normally, a resident inspector follows the material manufacturing process in the pipe mill or forge master foundry.

Ensuring that the SUPPLIER is using the correct material during the fabrication or manufacturing of the equipment is a critical element of quality surveillance.

Such verification can be done by examining SUPPLIER material traceability program (bagging, tagging, marking) and review of Mill Test Report (M T R) against the marking; proper handling and storage of materials at supplier premises.

Currently; Positive Material Identification (P M I) is extensively used in many project for confirming that correct material are used during fabrication.

P M I cannot be a substitute for MTR nor MTR could be a substitute for P M I.

Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP)

It is the maximum gauge pressure at the top of a pressure vessel allowed by design or code calculations for a set temperature. When the working temperature decreases or significantly increases, material strength is reduced and therefore the pressure
